1-Day Workshop: Nature and Landscape Photography in Los Angeles

I will be conducting a day-long Nature and Landscape Photography Workshop in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 14, 2019 (hosted by Los Angeles Center of Photography). An ideal workshop for the burgeoning beginning-intermediate nature photographer, we’ll be covering cameras (RAW capture and other vital settings); proper tripod and filter use; exposure (ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture); evaluating the histogram and dynamic range; focusing and depth of field; professional field techniques; and creative composition and understanding light – the works. The day begins with a few hours of indoor class lecture and discussion, followed by a brief group lunch, then travel time to our destination for shooting exercises and practice.

The above photos were wade in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, during a previous edition of this workshop. It’s proof that one needn’t leave home or travel to find beauty and photographs. On Exhibition: Nature LA: Off the Beaten Path

I’m excited to announce my upcoming exhibition at the G2 Gallery in Los Angeles: Nature LA: Off The Beaten Path. The opening reception takes place Saturday, October 3rd from 6:3o-9:oo pm and is concurrent with the opening of G2’s Off The Beaten Path: Views from Yosemite autumn exhibition (featuring Alan Ross, Art Wolfe, Clyde Butcher, Michael Frye, and approximately 30 additional photographers!). Both exhibitions hang through November 15.

My exhibit will feature fourteen (14) medium to large prints of retrospective photographs made throughout Yosemite country over the last decade or so (The Valley, Tuolumne Meadows, High Country, and beyond). I am especially thrilled with gallery director’s selections, all of which are obscure, abstract, or simply unrecognizable as Yosemite (“off the beaten path“). Four of the fourteen images are seen at left.

I hope you will consider joining us at the opening reception on October 3 at the G2 Gallery in Los Angeles for a beautiful night of Yosemite off the beaten path. A $10 admission fee benefits the work of The Yosemite Conservancy. I hope to see you there!

The Station Fire, Los Angeles

The Day Fire, Alamo Mountain, Los Padres National Forest

Photographer Brandon Riza has created an incredible time-lapse video (using a Canon 5D) of Los Angeles’s Station Fire on August 30, 2009. Although the Station Fire began only days ago, it is already one of the largest wildfires in recorded California history (the 2003 San Diego Cedar Fire is #1 at 273,246 acres burned), and with containment currently only at 5% and full containment projected more than two weeks out, it has the potential to finish in the Top 5. Let’s hope that it does not.

Since I could not embed the video, I’ve embedded one of my photographs from the Day Fire, California’s fifth largest recorded wildfire (264 square miles burned). In 2007, The Wilderness Society contracted me to photograph the post-wildfire environment on Los Padres National Forest’s Alamo Mountain.
