The Final Flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour

I have been fascinated by space craft and space travel since childhood. So it was a hard kick that I gave myself in 2011 when I first learned that the Space Shuttle program had been terminated. I was born in Los Angeles (and begrudgingly still live here), which is not all that far from Edwards AFB, and the shuttles often landed here when the weather was too poor to land in Florida. 30 years of opportunities that I took for granted and assumed would always be there for me. I had prepared to drive out to Edwards AFB for either Thursday’s landing or Friday’s takeoff, but was relieved to learn that I wouldn’t have to drive anywhere: Endeavour was going to be flying over my town, Long Beach, California!

Instead of getting in a car, burning carbon, and fighting hideous Friday traffic in LA, I pedaled to a local destination in a matter of minutes and joined thousands of other patriots and admirers who came to bid Endeavour adieu. The Queen Mary saw it first and let out a horn blast as the shuttle approached Long Beach from the south. The crowd then grew with excitement, applause, and cheers as Endeavour flew by and headed toward LAX just to the north. It was a riveting, powerful, and sad experience all at once. My images wouldn’t get any better from here, so I simply lowered the camera, welled up inside, and said goodbye.

Upcoming Exhibitions – June 2011

There will be two opportunities during the month of June to see my photographs on exhibit.

Monochromatic Moments will run at Gallery Expo in Long Beach, California, from June 3 through 30, 2011, and features three of my b/w white works (1|2|3). Gallery Expo is located at 4321 Atlantic Avenue in Bixby Knolls (Long Beach), California. The artist reception takes place June 18 from 6-8 pm in the gallery, although I will not be attendance as I’ll be exhibiting at the La Jolla Festival of the Arts (see below).

You’ll also find me exhibiting at the 25th Annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts June 18-19, 2011, in beautiful La Jolla, California. Here you’ll find more than 200 fine artists from across the country exhibiting their creations out of doors and under the sun on Warren Field at University of California San Diego. I’ll be exhibiting upwards of twenty framed pieces in my outdoor gallery at the Festival, and will also have a wide selection available of unframed prints, greeting cards, and more. This is my second year at this beautiful festival, and I hope you’ll drop by to say hello and to help make the weekend wonderful. See you there!

On Exhibit: ‘California Desert’; Long Beach, CA

I will have a solo exhibition showcasing approximately twelve large format black and white photographs of the California desert from September 9, 2010 through October 5, 2010, at the El Dorado Nature Center Art Gallery in Long Beach.

Comprising nearly twenty five percent of the state’s total land mass, the California desert – consisting of the Mojave, the Colorado, and the Great Basin deserts – is largely under-visited and misunderstood. For more than two decades, I have explored and photographed the recesses of California’s vast deserts. My prints are enjoyed by photographers, collectors, and critics alike, and reveal the subtle beauty, light, and intrigue of this enchanting and secret landscape.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 11, from 1 to 3pm, in the Art Gallery at the El Dorado Nature Center.

The El Dorado Nature Center Art Gallery is located at 7550 E. Spring Street, Long Beach, California, 90815. The Art Gallery is open 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Friday, and 8:30am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Parking fees are $5 on weekdays and $7 on weekends. More information is available online or by calling (562) 570-1745.

Please come out and say hello! I look forward to meeting you.
