Digital Camera Batteries – OEM vs. 3rd Party

I just wanted to pass along a brief word of advice regarding digital camera batteries: stick with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)! I have a Canon D-SLR, and I purchased along with it an extra Impact-branded 7.4 volt rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Fast forward to 1.5 years later – when I’m in the middle of an assignment – and I load up my fully-charged spare Impact battery only to discover that it has failed: dead! It held no charge and the camera was non-responsive. The Canon-branded battery – bought at the same time and used roughly the same – is still perfectly fine.

As you can see over at B&H’s reviews of this battery, I’m just one of many to experience early failure with this battery. Pay the extra $20-22 (at B&H) and get the Canon brand.

Paying less can actually cost you more in the long run 😉
